The DAILY 5
I am sure by now you have heard of the DAILY 5 from your child...
so I wanted to take a moment and explain to you what this is!
DAILY 5 is what the rest of the kids are doing, while I am meeting with small reading groups for guided reading instruction.
I LOVE the Daily 5 because it gives kids CHOICE, which I think makes learning more enjoyable for them! It gives them choices about what activities they do, how they complete their work, and when they do things. All of the activities are designed to build reading and writing skills independently.
Daily 5 activities are:
1. Read to self
2. Read to someone
3. Listen to reading
4. Word work (spelling matrix)
5. Work on writing
Each week you will see a DAILY 5 check-list come home (these are graded and entered into the grade book as a daily assignment). This is how kids tell me what they are working on, while I am not with them.
EACH WEEK every student should: Do each activity at least once, and complete 3 matrix activities
EACH DAY every student should: Do at least two different activities (if kids meet with me, that counts as one activity and should also be recorded on their checklist!)
